Do the Yankees trade for their next SS or is there someone in the farm system? That is a very tough question the Yankees are going to ask in the off season or in 2010 when his contract is up. Can he still play every game at ss for two more years? I don't think so. Lets look at whats out there. This years free agents are Orlando Cabrera, David Eckstein, Adam Everett, Rafael Furcal, Christian Guzman, Cesar Izturis, Edgar Renteria, Omar Vizquel. Not much there. Maybe a backup player, but little else.
I have a idea, but I dont know what the Yankees think about it. Robby Cano was a SS in the Yankee system before they moved him to 2nd base. Just a thought. Forget about Arod playing SS. That will never happen as long as Jeter is on the team. There are some great shortstops out there, but teams are not going to trade them unless they have a top prospect coming up. Michael Young of the Rangers would be a great one to get, as would be Hanley Ramirez of the Marlins. The Yankees must make a decision very soon.
Down on the farm the Yankees have a couple options. One option is Carmen Angelini, the 19 year old prospect playing for the Charleston RiverDogs. The 10th round pick in 2007 is hitting at a .240 clip with four homers and 39 RBIs. Questions have been raised about his defense, due to his astonishing 40+ errors. Just remember this......some no name player named Derek Jeter made the same amount, if not more during his minor league career. He turned out to be somewhat decent.
